calcitonin family peptides
- calcitonin family peptides
-
(= ADM; CGRP1; CGRP2; amylin; calcitonin)
Family of small (32-51 residue) highly
homologous peptides that act through seven-transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors. Adrenomedullin (ADM; 51 residues) is
a potent vasodilator and has receptors on astrocytes;
amylin (37 residues) is thought to regulate gastric emptying and carbohydrate metabolism;
calcitonin (32 residues) is involved in control of bone metabolism; calcitonin-gene-related peptides 1 and 2 (37 residues) regulate neuromuscular junctions,
antigen presentation, vascular tone and sensory neurotransmission. Receptors are themselves regulated by
RAMPs.
